What is whiplash?

If you have been in a car accident in New York, you may have suffered from whiplash. This condition is commonly a result of an accident that had a hard impact and caused your head to be whipped violently forward and back. According to WebMD, whiplash is an injury to the neck caused by strain.

Damage to the tendons and muscles in the neck occur when the head and neck are forced forward or backward due to an impact. You will usually know you have this injury because of the pain and the inability to move your neck in certain ways without extreme pain. Your neck may be stiff and tender to the touch. You may also get a headache. It is not always immediately apparent you have suffered whiplash. After an accident, you may feel fine, but days later, the pain sets in.

Usually, your condition is diagnosed by medical personnel based on your symptoms or through scans or X-rays. Sometimes you will suffer a concussion as well during an accident, which requires immediate attention and may bring about similar symptoms to whiplash, so you will have many tests to rule this out.

Time will generally heal your injury without the need for medical intervention. You can use ice, heat and painkillers to help with the pain and swelling. You may also need a neck brace to provide support, but only wear one if your doctor recommends it. This is general information only and is not intended to provide legal advice.
